Case brief
Case summary
Kaliyannan is a laborer belonging to a Scheduled Caste and resident of Rice miltur Village, Nallampatti Municipality of Perundurai Block of Erode District. Due to family circumstances, Kaliyannan’s daughter is working in a garments company owned by Vettaiyan Kinaru Thangamuthu near Gunnathur. She fell in love with Muthu Kumar and started chatting in social media – whatsapp and through Facebook.
Muthukumar is from a backward (BC) [Nadar caste] class and so his parents refused to get married with Kalai selvi. Muthukumar had told her that two of them can separate. And he had verbally abused in derogatory language referring to the caste name and asked her to die. Kalaiselvi committed suicide by hanging herself on the evening of 16-09-2021 at home. Praveen Kumar's case against Muthukumar at the Thingalur police station was first investigated and prosecuted under the Indian Penal Code. The accused was arrested and remanded in custody.
