Case brief

Case summary

Veeramani and Jayagandhi, a couple from Deviyanandal village, Ulundurpettai district, Kallakurichi district, were married about 22 years ago and have three daughters and one son namely Saraswati (20) – Diploma in Nursing Abinayaki (17) – studying 12th standard and was married, Monisa (15) is studying 10th class and their son Appu (13)  is studying 7th standard.

Eldest daughter Saraswati was a first year student of Nursing at Ramachandra Hospital, Chennai. Saraswati is belonged to Scheduled Caste Paraiyar community and fell in love with Rangasamy, son of Perumal of the same village and for more than 5 years right from school education.  Saraswati's family members did not accept their love since both belong to different castes.

Rangasamy and Saraswati left their homes and stayed in Tirupur for 10 days. In the view of this, the parents of Saraswati have been frequent fights over Saraswati's love affair for the past two years. Saraswati's father Veeramani is an alcoholic. Unable to bear his beatings and harassment, Saraswati's mother took her children Saraswati and Appu to her parents' house. Meanwhile, Veeramani had set fire to Jayagandhi's parents' house a year ago, claiming that his wife Jayagandhi and her parents were the reason for his daughter Saraswati falling in love with the Dalit youth Rangasamy.

After that Jayagandhi's parent were already night watchmen at the Porur Ramachandra Hospital in Chennai and has been working. Jayagandhi, who could not live in the same village, took her children to her parents in Chennai and worked as a cleaner at Ramachandra Hospital to save the baby.

In this situation, Veeramani and Jayagandhi have joined hands ahead of Saraswati's marriage. It is clear from talking to both of them that even now Saraswati's parents are not united. Jayagandhi's mother also told that after Saraswati's murder, she had heard that her paternal grandparents had left the town, brought my granddaughter and murdered her. Saraswati was brought to her hometown Deviyanandal village from Chennai last month and her parents forgot about her boyfriend Rangasamy. They also negotiated to have a relative get married and printed the wedding invitation. Saraswati is staying at the house of the groom who promised her. It is learned that Saraswati had then spoken to Rangasamy from the groom's phone.

On April 1, 2021 the groom picked up Saraswati and left her in Deviyanandal village. Saraswati was murdered on April 2, 2021 near her home and was lying dead. The police initially suspected Saraswati's father and called him in for questioning. Then on 15.4.2021 Saraswati's boyfriend Rangasamy, his brother Krishnasamy and his friend Raveendran were taken to the Thirunavur police station in connection with the case. FIR was filed under the Cr.No:262/2021, U/s:174(1) – Crpc Cr.No:262/2021, U/s:174(1) – Crpc, @ 302, 294(b), 404,201 – IPC murder case registered against the three and Rangasamy and Raveendran are lodged in Cuddalore Central Jail.
