Case summary

The 17th General Election to Lok Sabha had taken place in the state of Tamil Nadu on 18.04.2019 (Thursday). The Ponparappi falls under Chidambaram Constituency, which is a reserved constituency. The Government Higher Secondary School of Ponparappi village was the polling booth [No – 4] for the villagers. In the school, the first polling booth was allotted to the Gandhi Nagar – Paraiyar people to cast their votes. At about 7:00 am in the morning the voting was started at the booth.

The VCK National President Dr. Thol Thirumavalavan contested in the Chidambaram Constituency. Even as polling was on, a few persons allegedly affiliated to the PMK (Patali Makkal Katchi/Party) and Hindu Munnani broke a pot, the VCK chief’s symbol, which triggered heated arguments and a scuffle by 8: 30 in the morning. The Dalits came to know this incident and tried to cast their votes soon to the VCK Party.

Mr. Sankar, S/o Mr. Murugesan is holding as District Secretary in the Hindu Munnai Party. Under his headship Mr. Raja, S/o Mr. Rajangam of the same party broke the pot (i.e) symbol given to the Thol. Thirumavalavan party and broke the pot near the Ponparappi bus stop. The Dalit Youths who were standing in the bust stop informed this incident to the Dalits who are residing in the colony. And by exactly 3 pm in the evening, Mr. Sankar along with 60 persons came in two-wheelers with wooden logs, iron rods, long pipes and knives. They stopped their vehicles outside the colony and rushed into the Dalit hamlets in Gandhi Nagar and started destructing the Dalit houses. About 63 Dalit houses were destructed, 10 vehicles were damaged. The caste mob had also opened a petrol tank of a vehicle and set fire to it.

The caste mob had also attacked the Dalits in the colony and brutally attacked the Dalit youth Mr. Ravi, S/o Mr. Vadivel and had broken his two hands and his ears sustained continuous bleeding. The mob had also attacked Mr. Selva (19), S/o Mr. Karuppan and had profound cut in his head with the sharp edged knives. Selva’s mother Ms. Manimegalai, W/o Karuppan sustained continuous bleeding from her ears and the mob brutally attacked at her chest. About 30 persons’ sustained injuries and 14 had got admitted to the Jayamkondam GH & Tanjore Government Hospital as in-patients.
