Arundathiar Youth Naveen Subjected to Caste Discrimiation & Brutally Attacked by Dominant Caste Gounders, Vellode Kummakkalipalayam
Naveen, 25, S/o Mr. Thangavel (Late), belonged to Hindu Arunthathiyar caste (Sub Caste of Scheduled Castes) is resident of Kummakkalipalayam village, Perundurai Block, Erode district. He had studied up to 10th standard and due to his family situation he is working in a private SIPCOT industry near Perundurai. On 15.11.2020 (Sunday) his mother Thangamani (45), sister Deepa (24 years married) had gone near the forest area around 5 pm in the evening. Meanwhile, Yuvraj Gounder (35) belonged to Konguvalar Gounder caste (backward caste) had brought a lamb in his two-wheeler and his lamb tried to fall down. And he called Naveen without any respect in public view and asked him to accompany to Natrajan’s house. He had gone with Yuvaraj and went to Natarajan Gounder’s house. Natrajan saw Naveen entering his house and immediately verbally abused him in filthy language referring to caste names and blamed that he had taken the lamp from the herds shed. In addition he had also brutally attacked him.
Naveen, who was badly injured in the attack, was admitted to the Erode District Government Hospital with the help of his mother, sister, brother-in-law and relatives. The hospital informed the Vellode police station and then the Assistant Inspector Krishnaraj from the Vellode police station received a statement from the victim Naveen and filed FIR against Yuvaraj and Natrajan under SC/ST PoA Act on 16.11.2020. The general public of Kummakkalipalayam village surrounded the police station and staged a protest demanding immediate arrest of the perpetrators of the violence. Police Inspector Shanmugasundar and Perundurai Deputy Superintendent of Police Selvaraj- (DSP) told the protesters that they would arrest the accused persons within two days and that the police would provide protection to the victim and their family members.
