Case summary
Veeralur village near Kalasapakkam in Tiruvannamalai district is home to over a thousand caste Hindu families like Vanniyar, Udayar, Naidu, Konar and more than 500 Dalit Arunthatiyar families. The villagers continue to protest the removal of the body by Dalits on public roads. In this connection, in the presence of Arani Kottatsiyar and Kalasapakkam Vattatsiyar on 26.08.2021, it has been decided that in case of death of Dalit Arundhati, the body will be taken through the State Highway without any disturbance to law and order.
In this situation, Amutha, who belonged to the Arundhatiyar caste for the last 14 days, was admitted to the Thiruvannamalai Government Hospital due to ill health and died on the 15th the next day. Since the next day was a curfew on the 16th, the police had instructed that the body be buried on the 17th the next day. On the evening of the 16th, the Dalit people talked about taking the dead body across the highway as per the decision already taken in the presence of the authorities. Protesters have protested. Revenue officials who came to know about this went directly to the village around 4.00 pm. In addition, more than 10 police personnel, led by the Polur Deputy Superintendent of Police, are engaged in security operations.When the Thasildar, the village administration officer and the police visited the firing range, they were suddenly stopped by more than 300 caste Hindus.
Dalits gathered there have demanded permission to visit the authorities.Then (16.01.2022) Mani, S/o Muthumanikkam, Kumar S/o Kuppan, Manikandan S/o Kumar from Palani village, Palani, Raja S/o Jayaramakaundar and Kurusami S/o Nallennagaundar from Melcholanguppam village led by more than 500 Vanniyar caste youths from three villages [Viralur, Melcholanguppam, Kuttrampalli] in the area, wearing PMK [ Pattali Makkal Katchi] party T-shirts, entered the residents' quarters with knives, sharp edged weapons, sticks and cricket bats and severely attacked the Arunthathiyars and also caused damaged to the people's house, door, window, bureau, mixer, grinder, two-wheeler, house tile and electrical connection box, making it unusable.
The mass caste atrocity which started at 4.30 pm on 16.01.2022, ended at around 6.30 pm. The attack on the Dalit Arundhati was carried out in the presence of Revenue officials, including the Deputy Superintendent of Police, 10 policemen.
