Mohan Nayak aged about 70 years belongs to (Hadi) caste which is Scheduled Caste in Odisha. He got retired from Baragada Govt High School 10 year back and was staying in his village. There are 9 Hadi families living in the village. Traditionally the caste profession of these people was beating the drum near the village deity andduring the common festivals celebrated in the village. But many of the S.C person are engaged in different govt & private organisation and the caste profession and drum beating has been abandoned by them for over 40 years.
On 4.4.2016 at about 8 AM Mohan Nayak had gone to get some betel from the shop near the village temple of Dulana Thakurani. Near that shop three upper caste persons namely Ratanakar Jena, Purna Chandra Pradhan and Gaji Jena were drinking liquor on a pedestal. They called Mohan in a loud rude voice by his caste name and asked him to come near them. He was asked to beat drum as the Jhamu Yatra is going to be celebrated. Mohan Nayak denied soberly to beat drum showing his old age. This infuriated the advanced caste persons. Mohan was detained there with his hands tied, a drum was brought, at about 12.30 he was forced to beat the drum and move from door to door every house in hot sum.
