Brutal Assault on Dalit Youth Maruthoor PS

    A. Aelaimuthu (64), resident of Vathrayantheethu village, Chidambaram Taluk, Cuddalore District, belongs to Dalit Paraiyar community. He is the Priest(pujaari) in the Veeraanaar Temple. Vanniyars in this village practices untouchability and discrimination. Atrocities against Dalits are also commissioned at regular interval. Patchaivaaliamman Temple in this village is completely controlled by Vanniyars. Dalits were prohibited to enter the temple. Every year walking on glowing coal ceremony is organized in this village and the Dalits were not allowed to participate in the ceremony. On 31/0709, during the walking on glowing coal ceremony, one 12 year boy slipped and about to fell in the fire. Aelaimuthu, rescued him by getting inside the glowing coal. On seeing a dalit walking inside the glowing coal, the intolerant K. Manimaran, belongs to dominant caste hindu Vanniyar community, slapped Aelaimuthu and verbally abused him referring derogatory regarding caste name, saying “ you son of sakkili prostitute, how dare you walk on the glowing coal. Soon Manimaran was joined by K. Thillai, N. Selvarasu, P. Bharathi, and T. Anbazahan, all belongs to dominant caste hindu Vanniyar community. All the perpetrators brutally assaulted him. Even a police man who came for the security also assaulted him. On 01/08/09, he filed a case with the Maruthur Police Station. Then he was admitted in the Chidambaram Government Hospital. The perpetrators instigated some Dalits to file a forgery case against Aelaimutu. No action were taken against the perpetrators regarding this atrocity.

  • Summary::

    Pudusuripalayam village is in Nambiyur Union, Gopichettipalayam Taluk, Erode District. Dominant caste hindu Nadars are in majority in this village and the Dalits in the village and nearyby villages are subject to untouchability practice, caste based discrimination and atrocities. Ayyan Temple in Pudusuripalayam was under the control of Nadars since time immemorial. Dalits of Pudusuripalayam village are prohibited to enter the temple. They can pray standing 100 meters away from the temple. Only the Nadars and the caste hindus can enter the temple. In 2007 this temple was brought under the administration of Tamil Nadu Religious Endowments Department. Even after bringing this temple under the jurisdiction of TN Government, the temple entry denial and untouchability practice persisted. Since all the administrative members of the temple administration, happened to be caste hindus, they never tried to redress this untouchability practice. Inorder to redress this untouchability practice and discrimination, V.T. Rangasamy, belongs to VCK party made arrangements for temple entry festival and on 14/07/09, he filed a petition with the Nambiyur Police station, for the provision of security to avoid any untoward attack on Dalits. Hence District Administration, DSP, RDO. Revenue Inspector organized a peace meeting by calling Dalits and Caste Hindus. As the outcome of the peace meeting, 31/07/09 was scheduled for the day of temple entry. But on 31/07/09, when the Dalits gathered to enter the temple, Nadars mustered the support of other caste hindus in opposition to the dalits temple entry event. Around 4000 caste hindus from different community of caste hindus gathered together with deadly weapons like, woodenlogs, iron rods, cycle chains and prepared to assault the dalits.

     

    On seeing the situation, District Administration, RDO, Tahsildar and DSP convened a meeting with dalit leaders and asked them to give 10 more days to sort out the problem. As the Dalits agreed to the demand and they are on the way to their respective places. But the caste hindu mobs blocked the vehicles at multiple junctures and brutally assaulted the dalits. Eventhough Dalits tried to escape the assault by driving in different routes, caste hindus chased them and assaulted them. RDO filed a complaint regarding this and arrested Arumugamanickam, A. Baranitharan, Srinivasan, Selvan K. Murugan and 14 other dominant Caste Hindu perpetrators. On the complaint given by the Dalit victim Kovaikumanan, police have  not taken any action. V.T. Rangasamy, Kovaikumanan, Thangavel, Ambedkar, Kuppuraj, Swaminathan, Ramesh, Gopi, Thambirasan, Kittrivalavan, Gopirajan and Vinayahamoorthy sustained severe injury and were admitted in the Coimbatore Government Hospital. Arumugamanickam, A. Baranitharan, Srinivasan, Selvan K. Murugan and 15 other were arrested regarding this atrocity.

     

    Later this atrocity case was CANCELLED by the DISTRICT VIGILANCE AND MONITROING COMMITTEE as MISTAKE OF FACTS.

Murder of a Dalit village Ghada

    The village named Ghada is located in Disa taluka of Banaskantha district. It is 27 Km. far from taluka place. Darbar community is dominant class in the village. Untouchability is being practised in the village and because of that dalit community suffers a lot. The complinant of this case is a father of the victim. The Darbar namely Vaghela Bhopalsingh had killed the son of the complainant because the accused had taken some ten thousand rupees from Rameshbhai and when he demanded back the accused did not like that.

    The accused had killed the son of the complaiant by tractor but the police had registered offence under section 279, 337, 304 of IPC and Section 177, 184 of MVAct. In spite the complainant informed the police that this was the case of murder. The accused and police tried to convert the murder case into an accidental death. The police did not support the dalit therefore, more than 26 families have migrated from the village and set in front of the Mamlatdar office.

     

    It was a case of murder of a member of a schedule caste but in spite that the police registered FIR under section 279, 337, 304 of IPC. And Section 177, 184 of MVAct.

Custodial Death of Dalit Raman - Thoothukudi

     P. Raman alias Ramachandiran (32), resident of Srimulakkarai, Srivaikundam Taluk, Thoothukudi District, belongs to Dalit Pallan community. On 20/07/09 Aathur police officials remanded Raman’s brother P. Kanagaraj under police custody for investigation. When Brammasakthi (mother of Raman) and Ramasamy (brother in law of Raman), went to the police station to enquire about this. Police asked them to produce Raman for investigation and promised that they will release Kanagaraj. Hence on 21/07/09, Raman was produced before the police station for investigation. On 22/07/09, lawyer Velusamy, Jeyapal, Brahmasakthi and Rajalakshmi w/o Raman, went to the police station and gave Rs. 10000 as bribe and asked the police not to torture Raman. But crime branch police officials under DSP Chandrapaul, DIG Kannapan, and Aathur Police Inspector Muthukrishnan, brutally tortured Raman. On 27/07/09, Inspector Muthukrishnan called Velusamy and said that Raman sustained grievous injury during investigation and was admitted in the hospital and requested Velusamy not to make a issue out of it and not to file a case regarding this. But on 28/07/09 Raman succumbed to the brutal torture and died in the hospital. Hence on 30/07/09 relatives and dalit solidarity groups staged a protest and denied to receive the body condemning police custodial death and to take action against the police officials. After the intervention of the dalit leader Pasupathi Pandiyan relatives received the body and completed the rituals. As District Magistrate promised old age pensions to the parents of the deceased Raman and Government jobs to the wives of Raman, relatives withdrew the complaint and turned hostile towards the dalit solidarity groups campaigning for justice regarding this custodial death.

Atrocity on Dalit Savapur

    The village named Savapur is located in Malpur taluka of Sabarkantha district. It is 30 Km. far from taluka place. Tehre are around 200 families of patel communities, Nat families are 25 in number, Thakor has got 60 houses, dalits are very few in number including Rohit, Vankar. Sarpanch of the village is from patel community. Thakor is considered as dominant class in the village. Untouchability is being practised in the village.

    Mithabhai belongs to schedule caste and of Rohit community. He has got good amount of agricultural land in the village. The Nat community is keeping sheeps and goats; they destroy the corps of Mithabhai. They had some quarrel regarding that, therefore the accused namely Nagjibhai Nat and Babubhai Nat had attacked one Harshadbhai who is a son of the complainant.

    Thereafter, they alos fought with Mithabhai, Harshabhai was injured. Mithabhai was also beaten up. Thereafter, the complainatn gave information to the police and they registered FIR under section 323, 324, 504, 114 of IPC. And Section 3(1) 10 of SC/ST Act
