  • Summary:: Gopi from Kadampur village, Maduraanthagam block, Kancheepuram district worked with his parents, sisters family and 5 other families in the Logeswari rice mill near the Puzhal jail from 2002. The rice mill was owned by Sathish. In 2009, Gopi became ill and could not work in the rice mill. The smoke from the rice mill affected his health and he became ill. Inspite of this, Sathish forced Gopi to work. Sathish held his family ransom and jailed them in the rice mill. On 09.02.2009, Gopi submitted a petition to the District Collector. Following this the family was released on 28.04.2009. The Government failed to provide compensation for the released Irular families.

Denial of housing

  • Summary:: Twenty five Irula Tribe families were allotted one acre of land by the Government for housing in Anaikundram Village Acchirupakkam Union, Kanchipuram District. The Irulas have built their housing in 50 cents of the land and the remaining 0.50 cents of land was occupied by Vanniyars, Nayakkars and Edayars. All the 25 families gathered together and gave a complaint to the District Collector on 27.07.09 to regain the land from the enroachers But so far no action has been taken by the District Officials

  • Summary:: Manjeet Kaur w/o Jaswinderpal Singh resident of village-Soorapur, Tehsil- Nawanshaher District- Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar. Manjeet Kaur belongs to Ad-Dharmi caste which is declared as a Scheduled Caste by the state government of Punjab. The husband of Manjeet Kaur, Shri Jaswinder Pal has been living in England for the last ten years. Manjeet Kaur has adopted a person as a brother, named Shri Prabhjot Singh. On 27/07/2009 two outsiders entered the house by crossing the boundary walls at 09.30pm and assaulted Prabhjot Singh. They alleged that Prabhjot Singh had illicit relation with Manjeet Kaur. Manjeet called her daughter who tried to protect Prabhot Singh but the outsiders assaulted Manjeet Kaur and her daughter too. The outsiders rebuked Manjeet Kaur and condemned her illicit relation with Prabhjot Singh. Manjeet Kaur raised her voice and her neighbours assembled to protect her. In the meanwhile, the outsiders escaped. This case is registered under section 323/324/452 and also under the SC/ST Atrocities Act, 1989. Case is pending before the District Courts Nawanshaher.

Dalit Youth Attacked for Listening to Music

    Bhagwania Devi, her son Ravidas and his friend Lalbabu Paswan are resident of Kurji village under Patna Sadar police station in Patna Dist., belong to Scheduled caste community.

     

    On the incident 23rd July 2009 at Kurji Village of Patna a middle-aged Dalit woman namely Bhagwania Devi, her son Ravidas and his friend Lalbabu Paswan were listening to Hindi songs on mobile phone. This was disliked by some dominant caste Bhumihar community men from the same village, who objected and asked them to stop. When they ignored their threat and continued to listen to the songs, the irate dominant caste group allegedly abused and severely beaten them up. Ravidas was seriously injured and was admitted to a private hospital. 

     

    A case was registered in Patna Sadar police station on 23/07/2009 against the assailants, however non them was arrested. The accused persons are harassing the victims to compromise the case and so the victims are under threat now.

    Kaikala Chandra Leela, aged 43, SC madiga, was married to Kaikala Edukondala Venkata Ramana Rao, OC Kapu resident of Vijayanagar colony, Machavaram, Vijayawada, Krishna Dist. They have two girl children K.Anusha and K. Jhansi Lakshmi aged 19 and 17. Venkata Ramana Rao developed extra marital relationship with another woman named Veeramma three years ago and started neglecting his family and stopped even giving money for meeting the basic needs. When Chandra Leela questioned him he started harassing physically. When she requested to think about their children he said that they are not his children and abused her in the name of caste and threatened to kill her. Seeking justice she approached DSS.
