Kanduvatti Menace on Dalit Scavengers

    Oandipudur, Singanallur, Variety Mahal and Sullivan Road regions of Coimbatore city are home to nearly 2817 scavengers belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community. In this regions, Kanduvatti businessmen belongs to dominant caste hindu communities, voluntarily provide loans charging exorbitant interest rates. Hence most of the scavengers were indebted to these kanduvatti businessmen. If they fails to pay the interest on time, these men won’t hesitate to ransack the properties of the debtors. They threaten the poor scavengers and verbally abuse them referring derogatory regarding caste name. If the debtors fails to pay the interest on time, they took away their belonging by trespassing their home. Since the government started paying the wages through banks, these Kanduvatti businessmen threaten them and snatch their ATM card, Pass Book and their secret Pin number. Once the salary was credited, they withdraw the money on their own without seeking permission of the account holders (Scavengers). These creditors charge Rs.10 for every Rs.100 per month. Since most of the scavengers caught in the web of these Kanduvatti businessmen, victims have been appealing the government to take the initiative to release from this trauma. Lot of petitions has been sent to higher authorities of the government, but in vain.

Dalit in chain bondage

  • Summary:: Bhola Singh S/o Inder Singh age-30 years resident of Rameana, tehsil Jaito, Distt- Faridkot. He a member of Caste “Majhabi Sikh” which has been declared a scheduled caste by Government of Punjab. He is working with Angrej Singh S/o Minda Singh (jatt Sikh) resident of Rameana, tehsil-Jaito , Distt- Faridkot . Bonded labourer Bhola Singh was working from last 3 years .The employer had given advance money of Rs. 23000 to the previous employer of Bhola singh and sold him for his work. Bhola Singh worked from 5am to 9pm during the season he worked day and night for the employer. The employer do not allow any leave to Bhola Singh when he takes leave due to illness or necessary work then the employer charged him Rs. 250/- fine for day & night and add the amount in the advance amount charge interest according to his own wish. On 13/6/2009 Bhola singh worked till 2 a.m in the fields of employer then he came to his house for some time rest. The employer went to his house and beaten him mercilessly and abused him that why he came to his house for rest. Now the employer is demanding Rs. 50,000/- from Bhola Singh as a debt amount. The employer never paid him any wages & do not allow the bonded labourer to leave the work. Bhola Singh does not want to continue his services with the employer. The complaint was filed on behalf of Bhola Singh to DM, Faridkot and now he is physically free and free from bonded debt.

Attack on a Dalit family because of past enmity- Badera village

  • Summary:: This incident happened in village Badeda, Thesil Haroli, District Una, H.P. Mahinder Singh aged 28 s/o Charan Das aged 70 belonged to SC (Chamar) used to drive Harinder Singhs truck, who is a Jat caste, from the same village. After a month Mahinder told Harinder singh that he will not further drive the vehicle. On 03-06-09 at 9:15pm Harinder Singh with some of his friends entered Charan Das’s house and started abusing him and his family. Harinder left Charan’s house after sometime. Again around 11:30pm with 20-25 people entered Charan Das’s house. Harinder Singh and his friends started beating Charan Das and family. Next day Charan Das went to the police Station and lodged a complaint. Till date no action has been taken against Harinder singh. Counter case is registered against victim. Victims not receive any compensation and relief. Case is running in lower Court Una.

Denial of Land to 12 Dalit Women

    Dalit women of Tarapuram Taluk from villages namely Karapur, Krishnapuram, Karuppampalayam, Meenakshimangalam, Thalavaipattinam, and D. Kumarapalayam, filed a petition with the Agricultural Department through Adi Dravidar Welfare Department under Adi Dravidar Women Agricultural Land Scheme of TAHDCO. Hence the Agricultural Department indentified 12 acres of land in the D. Kumarapalayam, of Tarapuram Taluk, belongs to Palanisamy Kounder. Palanisamy Kounder agreed to sell the lands for Rs. 100000 for each acre. Hence all the 12 dalit women paid Rs. 25000 as advance and Agreement was made in this regard to transfer the ownership on the payment of remaining Rs. 75000. But Palanisamy sold all the lands to Sadhasivam for Rs. 110000/ acre. On knowing this, on 31/05/09, Kuppusamy, Chinnappan, Karupaayee and Karuppaathal, went to Palanisamy Kounder house located in D. Kumarapalayam. They raised objection for his illegal sale of the land to other person without their knowledge. Infuriated Palanisamy, who was not able to tolerate the assertion of dalits, verbally abused them referring derogatory regarding caste name. He and his nephew Mohan, threatened to shoot them to death. As the perpetrators tried to attack them, they escaped from the place of incident. On 01/06/09, the victims filed a complaint with the Mulanoor Police Station. But the Police have not arrested the perpetrators.

    Later this case was CLOSED as MISTAKE OF FACTS by the DISTRICT VIGILANCE AND MONITORING COMMITTEE.

Murder of 3 Dalits in Keelambur

    Keelambur village is in Ambasamuthiram Taluk, Thirunelveli District. In this village Dalits Pallans are in majority, and the Panchayat President post is always won by the Dalits. Hence dominant caste hindu Devar community members are apprehensive about this. Some of the Devar community people, engages is illegal sand mining. Dalits opposes this practice and resist the practice of illegal mining. Hence Dalits and devars are in conflict for a long time. During the Alwarkurichi Paramakalyani Temple car festival, Devar community youths assaulted Ramar belongs to dalit pallan community. In retaliation Dalits assaulted Saravanan and Ganesan belongs to Devar community. Devar community people decided to murder the dalits as an act of revenge. Hence on 30/05/09, Sudalai, Ganesan and Muthukumar all belongs to dalit pallan community were brutally assaulted with deadly weapons by Anthony, Saravanan, Patchirajan, Brahmaachi, Sailu, Ganesan, Muthaiah, Subramanian, Pandydevar and Karupasamypandiyan. Ganesan died on the spot. Sudalai with severe injuries managed to reach his house and reported about this assault to the villagers. Sudalai and Muthukumar rushed to the hospital but both died succumbing to the injuries. Ambasamuthiram Government Hospital have not immediately provided medical assistance, as they were ordered to delay the medical assistance by the Ambasamuthiram DSP who himself belongs to Devar community. Hence relatives and villagers of the deceased staged a protest and refused to receive the body, requesting for the arrest of the perpetrators. As the police department promised to arrest the perpetrators the relatives of the deceased agreed and withdraw their protest.
