Mass atrocity against Dalits

  • Summary:: Chinnan aged 55 Aged 55 S/O. Raman of Nalligoundanthottam, Therpatti, Tiruppur District on behalf of 30 families staying and working in brick kiln for the past 10 years, he along with 30 other families works in UMR brick kiln for more than 10 years as contract laboures. All the families have deposited our Public Distribution Cards and House Pattas to the brick kiln owner Ramasamy. He belongs to dominant Gowndar community. While they were doing work, a small quarrel took place between his family working in the kiln and one family of their village. Both the families belong to same Arunthathiyar community. In the name of settling quarrel the owner of the kiln intervened and told 30 dalits, including relatives of two families to come to brick kiln on 16.4.2010. The Chinna’s family was asked to pay a fine of Rupees one lakh if not they will not get their Ration Cards and Housing Pattas. Since they were not able to pay the amount, whole family including children were made to touch the feet of Goundars several times. Then the Goundars reduced the fine to Rs. 27000/-. The family borrowed the amount and paid the fine on the same day to Ramasamy Goundar and Mani Goundar. On 19.04.2010 Chinnan and family went to the police station and gave a complaint on 03.07.2010. A complaint was sent to Chief Minister, Home secretary, DGP and SP on behalf of SASY. No action was taken by the police and they concluded the case as mistake of fact.

CASTE ABUSE AND HUMILIATION

    K Satyanarayanamma (50) w/o Kushalaiah (late), SC madiga by caste is the resident of SC colony in Annavaram. Satyanarayanamma sells sarees by profession. She also does social work by helping out the dalit women of her area. On 14.4.2010 an announcement was made that the gram sabha will be organized at 10am by the gram panchayat. Satyanarayanamma went to the meeting along with the other dalit women of her colony to raise the issues of the community. While she was entering into the meeting, Narasaiah h/o of the Lakshmi - Sarpanch stopped her from entering into the meeting. Satyanarayanamma objected saying that she has come to discuss with the sarpanch regarding many pending issues of dalit colony such as roads, electricity etc and that  Narasaiah has no right to stop her. This irritated Narsaiah and abused Satyanarayanamma on the name of caste, humiliated her in front of all, said that there is no need to give any reply to her and pushed her down by lying his hands on her chest. The victim has stated that though Narasiah’s wife is the sarpanch, he only discharges all the duties and Lakshmi just signs. Later she lodged a complaint in Annavaram PS. A case was registered bearing Cr No. 76/ 2010 U/s 509 of IPC and 3(1)(x) of SC/ST (PoA) Act.

Attempt to Rape of a Dalit Woman Vice-Sarpanch

    The Rajasthan is most feudal State in India. So many inhuman incidents are still prevailing in the state. Rajasthan is the second highest state in terms of violations of Dalit Human rights. Dalits can’t enjoy their basic human rights freely in state especially in rural areas. Similarly Dalits can’t access their basic rights, especially dalit women. They are not safe even at their home. The people of influential caste assume them as their personal property. There is no means of their security.

     

    On 13 April, Tuesday, at 11pm Dalit victim Geeta Devi (Present Vice-Sarpanch), while sleeping in her house, the perpetrator Hari Ram Gurjar broke into house finding her alone at home with an intention to rape her. He fled away from there, when she cried out for help.  The family lodged complaint on 14.04.2010 in Sadar Thana Badodamave police station and a criminal case FIR No. 67/10 was registered against the accused.

     

    Perpetrator is pressurizing the victim’s family for compromise or else the family would face dire consequence. Because of the threat family migrated to Delhi.  The police arrested the culprit. The local administration also has given adequate police protection and monitory compensation of Rs 50000/- to the victim.

LALITHA BAI – DEATH DUE TO ACID ATTACK

    Brief Details of the Case:

    Lalitha Bai (14), D/o. Sukhnaik belongs to ST Sugali caste and is the resident of Venegandla, Pedakakani, Guntur District. She was studying 9th class in ZPP high school, Pedakakani, Guntur.  Lalitha Bai went to her sister Ramavath Parvathi Bai W/o Balagi Naik aged 30yrs house at Tenali for vacation.  On 07.04.2010 Lalitha Bai along with her sister and neighbor went to agriculture field for harvesting the crop and returned home in the afternoon and slept off. Around 3pm when somebody knocked the door, Parvathi’s son opened the door and informed the same to his mother.  Parvathi found one Mr. Subba Rao OC Vysya by caste belonging to Darsi village of Prakasam district.  Parvathi questioned him who he was and why he has come? She shouted at him saying that she noticed him yesterday i.e., on 6th April wandering around her house. She dragged him and beat. All of sudden Subba Rao took out the acid bottle concealed in the Tiffin box and threw on Lalitha’s body and tried to escape immediately. As he was trying to run away, he slipped on floor and sustained burn injuries due to acid.

    Lakshmi Bai and Subba Rao were moved to the government hospital at Tenali. On the same day victim Lashmi Bai was moved to the Amaravathi hospital at Guntur. As her situation was critical, she was moved to the GGH at Guntur on 9th April 2010 and she succumbed to the injuries on 11th April while undergoing treatment.

RENUKA – ABETMENT TO SUICIDE

    Brief Details of the Incident:

    Renuka (14) d/o Ponnakanti Hanumanthu, Budagajangam by caste and is the resident of Miyapur. She was studying 5th standard in A.P. Social Welfare Society Residential School at Shivareddypet, Vikarabad mandal in Ranga Reddy District.

    On 21st February 2010 night, Renuka’s classmate Ujjwala screamed as she had a bad dream due to which other students were also scared and started screaming. Lavanya and Nirmala the teachers sleeping in the next room got disturbed and beat all the students. As the teacher pushed Renuka against a wall, she had head injury and fell unconscious. Renuka was admitted to Govt. hospital at Vikarabad by the school staff and the same was informed to her parents. Having come to know, Renuka’s brothers Dastagiri and Prakasam went to the school and questioned the staff. They took Renuka to their house as instructed by the staff. This incident was given much visibility through print media.

    Renuka was brought back to school by her parents after recovery. The principal and the staff refused to allow her and warned them to take her back. Though they repeatedly brought Renuka to the school and pleaded, the principal and the staff rejected to allow her to continue her studies and warned of dire consequences, stating that due to her, the reputation of their school was lost and the marriage proposals for Lavanya were also cancelled. They also threaten saying that they will lodge a complaint in the police station against her and write that her conduct is bad in the Transfer Certificate. Due to this situation the parents of Renuka approached the Sub-Collector of Vikarabad, on 20/03/2010, but in vain.

    Renuka was very much interested to pursue higher education and that is the reason she joined the residential school in 5th standard since she got the seat through entrance test, though she was pursuing 7th standard in the government school. Dejected over the behavior of school management Renuka attempted for suicide by drenching herself with kerosene on 07/04/2010. She was admitted in Gandhi hospital Hyderabad by her parents. The doctors have confirmed that there are 75% of burns and situation is critical. A case has been registered in Miyapur P.S of Cyberabad, bearing Crime No. 160/2010 dated 07/04/2010 and on the same day dying declaration was recorded by the Magistrate. Renuka succumbed to the burn injuries on 22/04/2010.
