Devanaam Pudur village is in Udumalai Taluk, Tiruppur District. In this village dominant caste hindu Kounders are in majority. In this Kounders and other caste hindus practices Untouchability against the Dalit Arunthathiyar community. Dalits are prohibited to walk through the streets of caste hindus. They are not suppose to touch the caste hindus. Most of the dalits work in the agricultural land of caste hindus as daily wage labours and others work as scavengers. The Dalits livelihood is dependent on the caste hindus.
Kitaan resident of Devanaam pudur, belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community. On 26/09/09, around 7pm Aautha Puja was celebrated and almost all the shops were providing beans for free. Kitaan went to Arul Agencies and along with others in the crowd, he was waited to get free beans. As the crowd become uncontrollable, he was pushed into the front of the shop. As he was driven from pillar to post, he expressed his disappointment. Arul Agency Owner Rangasamy, who belongs to caste hindu community, who was intolerant towards this and being infuriated he and his employees assaulted him, as he entered close to the place where the deity was kept. On returning back to home, he reported this assault to his family members and one Shanmugam, who belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community. Hence Shanmugam and Kitaan, went back to Arul Agency to enquire about this. Rangasamy who could not tolerate the assertion of the Dalits verbally abused Kitaana and Shanmugam, and he asked his workers to beat them out. Hence his labourers, along with Andiyur Kumar, Auto Murugan and Rasu, brutally assaulted them with iron rods and wooden logs. Escaping from the assault, both kitaan and Shanmugam took refuge in a Tea shop, the mob followed them and again assaulted them. On knowing this assault, Kitaan’s sister Selvi begged the mob to stop the assault. Kitaan sustained severe injury in his head after seeing them in pool of blood, the mob fled from the scene.
Kitaan and Shanmugam were taken to the hospital around 10pm. In the hospital Kumar who brutally assaulted the Dalits, was given bed having sustained no injury. But Kitaan was asked to lay on the floor. They got medical treatment for about 10 days. Police have arrested only three of the perpetrators namely Rangasamy, Murugan and Kumar. After a week, even the three were released.
Kounders who could not tolerate the arrest, announced a bandh for two days. Dalit Solidarity groups staged a protest demonstration requesting stringent action against all the perpetrators. But the police all the members of Dalit Solidarity groups implicating them for disturbing the public tranquility .
Kasiammal (23), w/o Duraimurugan, resident of Thatchur village, Kallakurichi Taluk, Villupuram district, belongs to dalit Parayar community. On 24/09/09, while Kasiammal went to the ration shop along with her sister-in law (Parimala) and aunt (Anjala). While they were standing in the queue, Virudhambal, Krishnaveni and Indumathi who came late who were standing behind Kasiammal, went inside the ration shop (since they don’t want to touched by the dalit and not ready stand behind a dalit), not minding the queue. Kasiammal objected to this. Virudhambal verbally abused Kasiammal referring derogatory regarding caste and other unprintable words. When Kasiammal objected this, Virudhambal punched on her face. Krishnaveni pushed Kasiammal down. Then all the three dominant caste hindu women brutally assaulted Kasiammal. Parimala and Anjala cried for help. On hearing the noice, Seenu, wife of Virudhambal, came and he too assaulted Kasiammal. Virudhabal asked her husband to rape Kasiammal. Seenu tried to molest Kasiammal and he pulled her sari. Escaping from this onslaught Kasiammal ran in to her house being half naked without sari. Kasiammal sustained severe injury due to this assault, she developed chest pain as she was kicked over her chest. Then the atrocity was reported to her husband and she was taken to the Kallakurichi Government Hospital for medical treatment. A case was registered against the perpetrators, but the police was negligent to take action the perpetrators. Having seen the bias of the police, a protest demonstration was organized by the Communist party seeking the arrest of the perpetrators.
S. Veerakumar (40), resident of Lakshmi Nagar, Kovilpalayam, Pongallur Union, Tiruppur District, belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community. He is social activist, along with his wife Vijaya, he used to help the Dalit victims of atrocities. He is engaged in legal intervention regarding the Dalit temple entry assault issue in Valumbur and Ammapalayam dalit atrocity issue. R. Veerakumar (21), resident of Lakshmi Nagar, Kovilpalayam, belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community. fell in love with one Thanalakshmi d/o Balan, resident of same locality, belongs to dominant caste hindu Kounder community. Balan who was opposed to their love affair, reported this to Swaminathan, belongs to dominant caste hindu Kounder community. Hence on 25/09/09, Swaminathan called R. Veerakumar, to his farm land, and brutally assaulted him. He along with Balan tied Veerakumar with a rope and locked his mouth, beaten his wooden logs. Then they dragged him in to the Arunthathiyar Street, again assaulted him and verbally abused him referring derogatory regarding caste, in front of the large crowd. They deliberately did this to teach a lesson to the dalits, opposing inter-caste love affairs. R. Veerakumar approached S. Veerakumar seeking legal support in this regard. With the legal intervention of the S. Veerakumar, FIR was registered against Swaminathan and the perpetrator was arrested. Swaminathan who was infuriated by the intervention of S. Veerakumar, on the release on bail, tried to murder Veerakumar.
On 29/09/09, S. Veerakumar was waiting at the Avinashipalayam Bus Stand, to pick her wife, along with his brother-in-law Mariappan. Swaminathan who came along the way with his friend on a motorbike, with the motive to kill Veerakumar, on seeing him asked his friend to stop the vehicle. Then he walked towards Veerakumar, abused him and tried to attack him with a sickle targeting the neck. Veerakumar who blocked the attempt with his hand, sustained severe injury on his hand. Mariappan caught hold of Swaminathan from behind and enabled Veerakumar to escaped from the murder attempt. Then Mariappan managed to escaped from the assault of Swaminathan. Mariappan reported this atrocity to his villagers. Dalits immediately staged a road blockade, requesting immediate arrest of the perpetrator and condemning the police department for their negligence and bias in favour of the caste hindu perpetrator. Veerakuamar was admitted in the government hospital and later the accused was arrested after filing the case under attempt murder.
Keelpaattam Village, is in Palayangkottai Taluk, Thirunelveli district. In Seevalaperi Village, due to Arrack Selling dispute one Child Arunachalam s/o Paramasivan, went missing. This case was at the investigation stage since 1994. Later it was found that Paramasivan’s enemies belongs to his own community murdered Arunachalam. It was rumored that Arunchalam’s body was secretly buried by some Dalits of the Keelpattam village. Hence On 19/09/09 Speical Police Force, arrested Chelladurai, Sanyasi, Narayanan, Malaiyappan, Chellappan, and Palani, (all belongs to Dalits community and residents of Keelpattam village) and remanded them in the police custody. Later they tortured these innocent victims and forced them as being involved in the Arunachalam’s murder case. After producing them in the court, 5 were taken to the Palayangkottai Central jail and two were sent to Srivaikundam Jail. Chelladurai (50), is the village elder (leader of Kangaroo Court) in Keelpaattam. During 2007-2008, due to rivalry among Dalits under Manickkaraj and Samuthiram, 7 people got murdered due to this enmity. On 24/09/09, while Chelladurai was in the prison, people belongs to Manickkaraj faction, brutally assaulted Chelladurai and Sanyasi, with deadly weapons, accusing Chelladurai for the murder of Manickkaraj. Chelladurai was hospitalized in the High Ground Hospital. Police threatened him to say that he sustained these injuries as he fell in the bathroom. Chelladurai, who sustained fatal injury in his head, succumbed to the injury and died on 26/09/09.
61 Dalit Arunthathiyar community families, for the last 45 years, living in Busber well area of Muthukrishnapuram, Thoothukudi Taluk, Thoothukudi District. All these people are provided with Brick Houses during the reign of MGR. All these houses were denied Electricity Connection, access to public toilet and drinking water facilities. Most of the people are working as scavengers and daily wage labourers. Ward Councilor of Ward No.9, he took control over the Public Toilet and denied access to the 61 dalit families. As the Dailts approached the District Collector, they have been given access to the Public toilet. Ward Councilor who could not digest this humiliation, started working against the Dalits. Even after repeated petitions to the District Administration these people are denied access to electricity facilities and provision of Housing Patta. Ward councilor along with other caste discriminatory alleged engaged in evict these people from this location under the pretext of illegal occupation. They filed a petition with the social welfare minister seeking provision of Housing patta. Due to the influence of Ward cousilor, the district administration gave an order to these people to move away from the occupied land. On 09/09/09, District Administration, Municipal corporation and other government officials threatened all the 61 dalit families to evict from the place. On seeing the protest, opposed to the eviction plan the District Administration retreated from the place. Again on 16/09/09, When all the dalits have been to their work, demolished all the houses and left the people to live in the streets. Due to negligence of the District Administration, Municipal Corporation and the Social welfare Ministry, all the 61 Dalit families were rendered homeless and let to live in streets.
