Denial to Road and Mob Attack

  • Summary::

    Karambavilai is home to Dalit Paraiyar community and Vannathurai is home to dominant caste hindu Nadar community. Karambavilai is adjacent to Vannathurai, and caste animosity in very high in these region. On 15/01/2010, around 5.30pm  Balamurugan Sathish Muthu, Ethadimuthu, and Chinnadurai, were returning to their home through the Vannathurai Nadar Street. Balamurugan who came last was stopped by Mahendran and 15 others belonging to Nadar community and intimidated saying “why para buggers are going through our street?. Mahendran verbally abused him and slapped him. Balamurugan reported this to his brother Ashok. Hence Ashok, Balamurugan Sathishmuthu, Ethadimuthu, and Chinnadurai, went again to the Nadar street to enquire about this assault. Ashok questioned why we should not go by this street?. Immediately Mahendran, Mahesh, Sivaganatham, Senthil kumar, Thiyaharaj and 10 other dominant caste hindu Nadar community youths, brutally assaulted Dalits with deadly weapons. All sustained severe injury in their heads, as they were beaten by lathis and iron rods. Ashok fell unconscious on the road, one of the perpetrator hit him by riding the bike. Ashok and other victims were taken to the hospital for medical treatment. Following this attack water supply pipe lines to dalit village was destroyed by the Nadar youths and Dalit shops were torched by the perpetrators.

     

    Dalits of Karamavilai and other dalit solidarity groups staged a protest and road blockade seeking arrest of the perpetrators. The perpetrators and Nadar community people filed cases against the victims of atrocities. The police department is negligent to take action against the perpetrators.

Brutal Assault and Temple Encroachment

    N. Makkali, resident of S.R. Nagar, N.Andipalayam, Tirupur district, belongs to Dalit Kuravar community. He is working as a temple priest in Sri Karruparayan Kannimar Kula Thirukovil, located in 15-Velapalayam Municipality. This temple was owned by 56 families belongs to Kuravar community. 26 cents of land, around the temple premises is associated with this Temple. The temple owners gave away 10 cents to the Municipality for the construction of road. As the years goes by, many caste hindu kounders settled around the temple premises. This newly settled kounders, considers the location of a temple owned by kuravas near their neighborhood as pollutant and shame. Hence they were trying to acquire the land and evict the temple from their area. They started encroaching the land around the temple.

     

    On 12/01/2010, around 100 Kounders under Krishnan Eswaran, Mani, Kasiappan, gathered infront of the temple with deadly weapons. They started demolishing the God’s statue. When Makkali objected to this demolition and enquired about this, Krishnan and Mani, verbally abused them referring derogatory regarding caste name. They beaten him on his head, infront of the crowd. Makkali and his community people reported this atrocity to the Erode SP and sought action against the perpetrators. Then a case was filed in the Anupparpalayam Police station. But the police department is negligent to take action against the perpetrators. Even after repeated complaints to the senior police officials, no action was taken on the complaints given by Makkali and his community people.

Removal of Ambedkar Statue

    Palayapattinam village is in Virudhachalam Taluk, Cuddalore district. In 2008 August 15, unanimous decision was arrived at the Palapattinam Panchayat Gram Sabha meeting, to build a Ambedkar Statue at the Panchayat Office building. Following this decision, Ambedkar Statue was erected at the panchayat office premises. Abdul, gave 2.40 acres of his land to the Dalits of this village to woo their vote banks. He failed repeatedly in the elections and on realizing the dalits have not voted him during the election, he filed a stay order in the court concerning the transfer of land. But the court order was in favor of the Dalits, hence he pusuaded the muslims and Vaniyars of Palayapattinam Panchayat to file a petition with the district administration for the removal of the Ambedkar Statue. Muslim organizations, Vanniyars joined Abdul in his demand seeking the removal of the Statue.

     

    Hence on 20/01/2010, Ambedkar Statue was removed with the presence of the RDO, DSP and Inspector and re-planted at the Palayapattinam village. Dalit Solidarity groups file a complaint against the removal and demanded the re-instation of the statue at the Panchayat office premises. 250 affidavits have been filed in this regard and appeal for stay order was sought at the High court. A five member committee was sent to investigate the issue. On 31/02/2010 the committed made an judgment and gave an order for reinstating the Statue at its original place.

Police Atrocity and Denial to Temple Entry

    Periyakosanam and Paruthikattumedu villages are in Nambiur Union, Gopichettipalayam Taluk, Erode district. People Dalit Arunthathiyar community are denied customary rights and they are not allowed to enter the temple. They are subject to caste based discrimination and atrocity. Mahakaliamman Temple located in periyakosanam belongs to government, but the Arunthathiyars were historically denied entry to this temple. On 07/01/2010, Arunthathiyars of these villages as usual went to the temple to worship from outside. On noticing that the Parayars (another Dalit community) are beating drums inside the temple, they attempted to get inside the temple. But Radhakrishnan, Chidambaram, Palanisamy, Ayyasamy, Shanmugam, Aaron, Koliperumal, Muthappan, Ponnusamy and other dominant caste hindu community people, verbally abused them referring derogatory regarding caste name and threatened to kill them if they try to get inside the temple.

     

    On 09/01/2010, Selvan and 300 dalit Arunthathiyars, belongs to Dalit community filed a complaint regarding this atrocity. Inspector Muthusamy told that only DSP have to conduct investigation and he asked the people to sign on a blank paper. On the same day around 3pm Muthusamy convened a Kangaroo court infront the Police station. All the caste hindus were given seats and the dalits were seated on the ground. Muthusamy told if I have to take action then I have to file cases against the both the parties. He persuaded the dalits to compromise and withdraw the complaint. On hearing this Kangaroo court, Thangavel and Marriappan came to the spot. Thangavel asked Muthusamy why you got a sign on a blank paper. Infuriated Muthusamy verbally abused him and slapped him thrice. Immediately he was joined by other police men. All of them dragged Thangavel inside the police station and brutally assaulted him. He was attacked with the knife of the gun and was hit by the back of the rifle. Thangavel sustained severe injury by this attack. On noticing that the people were gathering outside the police station, the police men left him. Thangavel was admitted in the Government Hospital for medical treatment. Thangavel, Selvan and Mariappan were filed under false cases given by SI Gandhimathi. Thangavel was arrested regarding this. All the accused were acquitted at the Erode Court.

Mass Atrocity and Criminal Intimidation Banglapudur PS

    R. Selvan (39), resident of Aelur village, Gopi Taluk, Erode district, belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community. He is a daily wage labourer. Chinnadurai Kounder owns a rice mill near the Aelur Bus stand. Near to his rice mill, there is government poromboke land, where people used to urinate. On 29/12/2010, around 5pm due to lack of latrine facilities, Selvan went to the government poromboke land near Chinnadurai Rice Mill to pass urine. On noticing this Chinnadurai shouted at him saying not to urinate at that place. Selvan replied that this land belongs to government and all people used to urinate here. Chinnadurai and his driver Pongiyan, who could not digest this assertive reply of a Dalit, verbally abused him referring derogatory regarding caste. They followed Selvan to attack him. Only after an apology from Selvan both the perpetrators left the scene. On noticing this, Ammasai and Raman, who belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community, enquired about this incident. Then Ammasai, Raman and Selvan, went to the rice mill and asked Chinnadurai why he abused and attempted to attack Selvan. Infuriated Chinnadurai and Pongiyan again verbally them and threatened to kill them with the sickle. On escaping from the scene, All the three with the help of Thambirajan, gave a complaint with the Banglapudur Police Station. On seeing the negligence of the SI Kalikounder to file the complaint, the three victims and the 150 Dalits of the Aelur village, staged a protest to register the case and to arrest the Perpetrators. DSP conducted an enquiry and promised to take action agasint the absconded perpetrators.

     

    On 07/01/2010, Panchayat President Selvam and other caste hinud influential people convened a Kangaroo court and threatened Selvan forcing him to withdraw the complaint. Selvan withdrew the complaint, but Thamibirajan objected to this. During the evening Sakthivel overheared the mob attack plan of the dominant caste hindus. Hence Sakthivel, Thambirajan, Ramesh, Swaminathan and Ammasai, went to enquire about this. The infuriated dominant caste hindu mob, who could not digest the assertion of dalits, brutally assaulted them. Again  a complaint was given regarding this mob atrocity. Police registered the FIR against the perpetrators, but all accused have absconded. Police patrol was ordered in the Aelur village.
