R. Selvan (39), resident of Aelur village, Gopi Taluk, Erode district, was attacked and verbally abused by Chinnadurai Kounder (who owns a rice mill near the Aelur Bus stand) and his driver Pongiyan, for urinating in the government poromboke land. On noticing this, Ammasai and Raman (belongs to dalit Arunthathiyar community) enquired about this and asked Chinnadurai why he abused and attempted to attack Selvan. Infuriated Chinnadurai and Pongiyan again verbally them and threatened to kill them with the sickle. On escaping from the scene, All the three with the help of Thambirajan, (District Secretary of VCK party and a Dalit), gave a complaint with the Banglapudur Police Station. After exerting pressure on the Police department a case was filed against the perpetrators.
On 07/01/2010, Panchayat President Selvam and other caste hinud influential people convened a Kangaroo court and threatened Selvan forcing him to withdraw the complaint. Selvan withdrew the complaint, but Thamibirajan objected to this. During the same day evening Sakthivel overheared the mob attack plan of the dominant caste hindus. Hence he objected to this. But Muthusamy kounder assaulted him. On knowing this assault Thambirajan, Ramesh, Swaminathan and Ammasai, went to enquire about this. The infuriated dominant caste hindu mob, who could not digest the assertion of dalits, brutally assaulted them. Again a complaint was given regarding this mob atrocity. Police registered the FIR against the perpetrators, but all accused have absconded. Police patrol was ordered in the Aelur village.
Nandha Kumar, resident of Sengalipalayam, Thudialur Gandhi Colony, Coimbatore, belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar Community. He is a flower decorator for marriage ceremonies. His wife A. Lakshmi (33) is a home maker and he has two children namely Devadarshni (6) and Gowrishankar (5). In 2008 Nandha kumar received Rs. 18000 from Chandra Mohan who is a Kanduvatti Creditor, belonging to dominant caste hindu Naidu community. Nandhakumar paid back Rs. 15000. But Chandramohan who used to charge exorbitant interest rate, asked them to pay extra Rs. 35000 as a balance amount. Since Nandhakumar and Lakshmi were struggling to make the payment on the right time, Chandramohan started exerting pressure by threatening them by some unknown persons and police in plain clothes.
On 04/01/2010, around 12.30 am came to Nandhakumar’s house and verbally abused them referring derogatory regarding caste name. When Nandhakumar expressed his poor condition, Chandramohan asked him to make money by indulging his wife in prostitution and asked him to pay the debt by sending his wife to him for sexual relationship. On 05/02/2010, Chandramohan went to the Devanga Preparatory school and threatened Nandhakumar’s Children Devadarshini and Gowrishankar, that he will kidnap them if their fails to pay the debt. Chandramohan abused them, Teacher Bhuvanashvari scolded him and warned him to go out of the school. Despite the warning of the teacher, he used to harass the kids by threatening them. Hence fearing Chandramohan, Devadarshini and Gowrishankar refused to go to school.
Nandhakumar unable to bear the humiliation and mental torture, tried to commit suicide by consuming poison. He was rushed to the Kovai Government Hospital and he survived the attempt. Lakshmi filed a complaint with the Periyanayakkanpalayam Police station. Police departmentt is negligent to take action against the perpetrator. Hence they filed a complaint with the DSP on 08/02/2010, and an FIR was registered on 09/02/2010. Police refused to invoke section 306 of IPC regarding abet to suicide. The victims were not provided any monetary relief regarding this atrocity.
K.Prisukumar (29), resident of Sowmiya Garden, K. North Madurai, Coimbatore district, belongs to Dalit community. He is pursuing BE 4th year in Coimbatore GCT Engineering College. On 02/01/2010, around 3pm, while on his way to the Pothanur Railway station to book train ticket for his father, he stopped his bike at LNT Bye-pass road near Malumichampatti to have his lunch. While he was having the lunch, under a tree in a nearby farm, Balu, the nearby farm owner, enquired who he was. Parisukumar in return who are you to ask about me. Hence Balu replied that he is the owner of the farm land and also a leader of the Kongu Paeravai party. Parisukumar replied that he is a BE graduate and his uncle is associated with the VCK Party. On knowing that he belongs to Dalit community, Balu and four of his associates,verbally abused him referring derogatory regarding caste and beaten him with the tire, saying “how dare you (Dalit) speak to us like this. Parisukumar sustained severe injury all over his body. He managed to reach Kovai Government Hospital to get medical treatment. Chettipalayam visited the hospital and received the complaint.
Balu and one of his associates were arrested regarding this atrocity. Remaining 3 of the perpetrators were not arrested.
K. Sampath (43), resident of Arunthathiyar Colony, Koundanpalayam, Bhavani Taluk, Erode District, belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar Community. He is working in a loom industry. On 01/01/2010, around 12.30 am, Kodiswaran and his friends were celebrating new year eve with cake near the Maduraiveeran Kovil. They shared new year wishes to Muthuvel, Ramachandiran, Periyasamy, Pushparaj, Yuvaraj, Moorthy all belongs to Kounder commumity, who came along the way in their bike. But the caste hindus, abused them saying, how dare you sakkili mother fuckers celebrate new year and asked them why you sakkilis are celebrating new year. When the Dalits youths objected to this, they again verbally abused them referring derogatory regarding caste. Sampath, who was returning home from work, witnessed this and asked Arunthathiyar youths to return to home. In the midst, suddenly the Kounder community youths started attacking the dalits with deadly weapons like knife, lathis, Cement slabs and blades. When Sampath asked them to stop the onslaught, the attacked Sampath. The perpetrators slit Sampath’s neck. Sampath sustained severe injury in his neck, nose, cheek and he fell uncouncious. All others sustained minor injury. Sampath was hospitalized at the Erode Government hospital for medical treatment. As the people gathered hearing the cry of the victims, all the perpetrators ran away from the scene.
People of the Arunthathiyar Colony went to the Andiyur Police Station to file the complaint. But the Head Constable Shivaji refused to register the complaint. Then the Dalits approached the SI Suresh and asked to file the complaint, even he refused to file the complaint. Hence all the Dalits of the village staged a demonstration protesting the Police negligence. Then the Police registered the FIR and arrested two of the perpetrators. After another protest demonstration, police arrested 6 others accused regarding this atrocity.
