S. Malathi (16), resident of Kaliyankulam, Aalangkulam Taluk. Thirunelveli district, belongs to Dalit Pallan community. Her father is a daily wage labour. She is studying 11th Standard in St. Paul Higher Secondary School located in Singhampaarai. During quarterly exam she fell ill due to fever. Her parents gave tablets for that and after the exam, they took her to the Mukkudal primary Health Centre. Even after this, as her fever have not reduced, they took her to the Mukkudal Beedi Labourers Hospital. There her parents were advised to take her to the Thirunelveli Government Hospital, fearing she is having Brain Fever. Malathi was admitted in the Medical college hospital, Thirunelveli in the ICU. After a treatment for a week in the ICU, she was shifted to the 127th ward for further treatment for a month. Then she was transferred to the Neurology department. She was given treatment for nearly 15 days. The doctors have not provided the right medicine considering the cost of the medicines and they compelled Malathi’s father to get those costly medicines on his own. They delayed the treatment considering the cost of the medicines required to cure Malathi’s illness. During the course of the treatment, she started complaining dizziness and poor eye sight. As the days goes by, her health deteriorated and her eye sight becoming dull. On 23/12/2009, around 1 pm she lost her eye sight completely. Malathi’s father Sivanathan, wrote a petition to the District Collector to recommend to provide treatment under the government scheme in private hospital. Doctors in the Hospital were accused of taking fluids from her back bone twice in a day consequently for the 15 days, this leads to her poor health condition and loss of eye sight.
S. Madurai Veeran (37), resident of Kalugumalai, Kovilpatti Taluk, Thoothukudi District, belongs to Dailt Arunthathiyar community. He is married and father of two girl children. Eldest daughter is studying 12th Std and the second daughter is studying 9th std. He is owning a foot wear shop and he is also a cobbler. On 11/12/2009, while Madurai veeran is working in his shop, Madasamy (65), belongs to dominant caste hindu devar community, came to his shop and threw his chappal at Madurai veeran and asked him to stitch it. Madurai Veeran, who could not tolerate this humiliation, asked Madasamy to give the chappal to his hand with due respect. Madasamy who could not tolerate this assertion of self respect by a Dalit, slapped him repeatedly and verbally abused him referring derogatory regarding caste. Ms. Bathali w/o Gurusamy, belongs to dalit Arunthathiyar community, cried for help. On lookers prevented Madasamy from making further assault. Madasamy threatened to kill Madurai veeran. Madurai Veeran with the help of Mr. Suppan, filed a complaint with the Kalugumalai Police station. FIR was filed against the perpetrator. Then the Police Sub-Inspector immediately located Madasamy and arrested him. After three days victim and the perpetrator compromised and the victim withdrew the complaint.
